Bombing of Medical Facilities

 

This report has been compiled on the basis of daily reports submitted by medical establishments. Since many areas sustained repeated bombing, some medical facilities appear in a number of daily reports on damage.

 

Report on Medical Facilities Damaged by the Bombing

Status as at 31 March 1999

1. In the area under the jurisdiction of the Raška District Office in Kraljevo, the following facilities have been damaged:

  • Studenica Medical Center, Kraljevo - Outpatient Clinic in Ladjevci (broken windows and partially damaged building),
  • Outpatient clinic in the village of Miločaj (broken windows),
  • Pharmacy in the Outpatient Clinic Ladjevci - damaged.

2. In the Nišava District, Niš, the following facility has been damaged:

  • Student Medical Center, Niš - broken windows

3. In the Jablanica District, Leskovac, the following medical facilities have been damaged:

  • Medical Center in Leskovac - General Hospital: 80% of glass broken, roof damaged 30%, joinery: broken window frames, doors, closing mechanisms - broken locks (approximate damage 10%), sewerage ducts (30% damaged), approximately 50% of the hospital facade has been damaged.
  • Health Care Institute, Leskovac - broken windows.

4. In the Kosovo District, Priština, the following damage has been sustained:

  • Priština Outpatient Clinic - Dental Department, located in downtown Priština: 100% damage.

5. In the City of Belgrade, the following medical establishments have been damaged:

  • Rakovica Outpatient Clinic - facilities in Labudovo Brdo, Resnik and infirmary in DMB factory (broken glass). The greatest damage is recorded in the DMB infirmary (750 m2 of 4-mm thick glass broken).
  • Zemun Outpatient Clinic - infirmary „13 Jul" within PKB Zemun on Batajnica Road (broken glass).

„Dr Sima Milošević“ Outpatient Clinic on Banovo Brdo sustained damage on the following facilities:

1) Outpatient Clinic in Sremčica:

- cracked partition walls,
- three breaks on the sewerage pipe,
- water supply pipe broken in six places,
- about 100 m2 of floor sunk in the pharmacy,
- 116 window panes broken (150 x 90 cm each),
- entrance door glass broken in three places,
- three door frames put out of place,
- outer walls cracked and water penetrated into the shelter (suspected sliding of the building in foundation and damage to the drainage system).

2) Damage in the Outpatient Clinic in Železnik:

- several vertical fissures on walls
- several horizontal fissures on the roof
- wall cracked at the joint between the old and new buildings
- all partition walls in the Dental Department cracked
- a central heating pipe broke in the Gynecology Department and flooded the floor below,
- 38 window panes broke (80 x 70 cm each)
- 15 door frames cracked
- 18 window frames cracked.

6. In the Kosovo-Pomoravlje District, Gnjilane, the following medical facilities have been damaged:
Pharmaceutical Enterprise, Gnjilane - broken glass on the Pharmacy No. 1 in Gnjilane,
Outpatient Clinic in Kosovska Vitina - infirmary in the village of Vrbovac shattered to the ground.

 

1 April 1999 update

7. In the Jablanica District, Leskovac, the following medical facilities have been damaged:
Medical Center Leskovac - General Hospital:

1) 80% of glass surface (900 m2) broken,
2) in the rehabilitation, infectious, psychiatric and pneumo-phthisic wards, the roof structure with roof tiling has been damaged (estimated damage app. 30%),
3) in all hospital facilities, joinery has been damaged, window panes broken, doors cracked, closing mechanisms and locks broken - estimated damage app. 10%,
4) cast sewerage pipes have cracked on many points - approximate damage 30%,
5) the hospital facade - some 50% of the surface - has been damaged.

Health Care Institute, Leskovac:
1) skylight glasses broken (10 panes),
2) 81 window panes broken

Pharmaceutical Enterprise Leskovac
1) „Hipokrat" Pharmacy - broken glass on the pharmacy
2) „Centrala" Pharmacy - broken glass on the pharmacy
3) „Sutjeska" Pharmacy - broken glass on the pharmacy

 

2 April 1999 update

8. In the Peć District, Peć, the following medical facilities have been damaged:

  • General Hospital in Djakovica - broken windows,
  • Outpatient Clinic in Djakovica - inoperative due to the damage caused by the NATO air strikes in the vicinity.

9. The following medical establishments have been damaged in the Kosovska Mitrovica District, Kosovska Mitrovica:

  • Medical Center in Kosovska Mitrovica - Kosovska Mitrovica Outpatient Clinic - 17 windows broken,
  • Outpatient Clinic in Leposavić - several windows broken,
  • Outpatient Clinic in Vučitrn - several windows broken.

 

4 April 1999 update

10. In the Raška District, Raška, the following facilities have been damaged:

  • Outpatient Clinic in Raška - broken glass on doors and windows (app. 150 m2), 13 windows blown out, 10 doors damaged, plaster damaged at various spots; medical equipment damaged (centrifuge, galvanizer, diadynamic and ultrasound).

 

5 April 1999 update

11. In the Nišava District, Aleksinac, the following facilities have been damaged:

  • Medical Center in Aleksinac - the Outpatient Clinic building in Aleksinac has been completely demolished by a missile which struck 10 m away. The building housed the Emergency Medical Care, General Medical Services, Dental Services, Sanitary and Epidemic Control Service and At-Home Care. The mentioned services have been relocated to the hospital section of the Medical Center in Aleksinac.

Medical Center in Aleksinac - all windows on the second floor of the hospital section have been broken.

 

6 April 1999 update

12. In the Nišava District, Aleksinac, the following facilities have been damaged:
Medical Center in Aleksinac - heavy damage to the facilities housing the Outpatient Clinic, Emergency Medical Aid, Infirmary and Dental Clinic, as well as hospital building.

13. In the Nišava District, Niš, the following facilities have been damaged:

  • Infirmary and Occupational Medical Center within the Outpatient Clinic for Industrial Employees in Niš have been heavily damaged.
  • Infirmary in JNA Square No. 7 - broken glass, app. 24 m2.

 

7 April 1999 update

14. In the Moravica District, Čačak, the following facilities have been damaged:

  • Medical Center Čačak - Outpatient Clinic in Lučani: broken windows, several doors blown away, venetian blinds damaged.

15. In the Jablanica District, Leskovac, the following facility has been damaged:

  • Medical Center, Leskovac - Outpatient Clinic: broken windows.

16. In the Moravica District, Čačak, the following facility has been damaged:

  • Medical Center Čačak - Outpatient Clinic in Lučani: damaged roof structure, broken roof tiles and doors blown away. The building is no longer fit for use.

 

9 April 1999 update

17. In the Nišava District, Niš, the following facilities have been damaged:

  • Infirmary at the Tobacco Factory: 90% of window panes have been broken (app. 1000 m2) and the main entrance door on the building has been broken. In repeated bombing, additional 200 m2 of glass surface broke.
  • Infirmary „Jastrebac", broken window panes (approximately 200 m2).
  • Infirmary housed in the Engineering Faculty building: broken window panes in the dental department, general medical service department, waiting room, entrance door frame out of place, cracked entrance door staircase and window panes in general medical service department.

18. In the Nišava District, Aleksinac, the following facility has been damaged:

  • Medical Center, Aleksinac

 

14 April 1999 update

19. In the Zlatibor District, Čajetina, the following facility has been damaged:

  • „Čigota“ Institute for Thyroid Gland and Metabolism - the lodge of the „Tornik“ sports and recreational center has been demolished.

 

15 April 1999 update

20. In the Southern Banat District, Pančevo, the following facility has been damaged:

  • „Južni Banat“ Medical Center, Pančevo: damaged kitchen and laundry.

21. According to the report for 15 April 1999 the damage sustained on 24 March 1999 in the Toplica District, Prokuplje, refers to the following:
Medical Center in Prokuplje, organizational unit Outpatient Clinic in Prokuplje: broken glass, 27.5 m2 of airtight glass, 12 m2 plain glass (10 mm) and 2.1 m2 6-mm glass.

22. According to the report submitted on 15 April 1999, referring to the damage caused by the bombing on the night of 7/8 April 1999, the following facilities were damaged in the Pomoravlje District, Ćuprija:

  • Ćuprija Medical Center, organizational units General Hospital and Outpatient Clinic: damaged walls and roof structure, windows and doors blown out of place, broken glass 485.46 m2.

23. According to the report submitted on 15 April 1999 (update of the report of 31 March 1999) the following facilities have been damaged in Belgrade:

  • Outpatient Clinic in Rakovica sustained damage on the following facilities within its scope:
    - Kraljice Jelene Street Nos. 11 and 22 - broken glass, three windows and two doors blown out of place;
    - Infirmary in DMB factory - broken glass, cracked walls and ceilings;
    - Kanarevo Brdo - many windows broken;
    - Labudovo Brdo - many windows broken;
According to the findings of the committee for the assessment of damage, the total area of broken glass is approximately 200 m2.

 

24. According to the report submitted on 15 April 1999, due to the bombing on 8 April 1999 the following facility was damaged in the Moravica District, Čačak:
Medical Center Čačak, organizational unit Outpatient Clinic, Čačak - damaged roof structure, broken roof tiles, doors blown out.

 

16 April 1999 update

25. In the area of the Toplica District, Prokuplje, the following facility was damaged by repeated bombing:

  • Outpatient Clinic, Kuršumlija:

Damage on 24 March 1999:

- cracked walls in the administrative building, general medical service and dispensary,
- damaged facade (app. 50 m2) of the administrative building and general medical service,
- broken window panes (60 m2) and wallboards in the administrative building (30 m2),
- damaged drain pipes (30 m).

 

Damage on 2 April 1999:

- further widening of fissures which appeared after the first bombing on 24 March 1999,
- further damage of the facade on old buildings (app. 40 m2),
- broken window panes (30 m2),
- damaged drain pipes (20 m).

Damage on 14 April 1999:
- facade damage (60 m2)
- broken window panes (40 m2)
- damaged drain pipes (10 m)

 

19 April 1999 update

26. According to the report submitted on 19 April 1999, the following facility in the City of Belgrade was damaged by the bombing on the nights of 12/13 April 1999 and 14/15 April 1999:

  • Orthopedic and Surgical Institute „Banjica" - most window panes and glazed doors were broken, fissures and damage appeared on the walls, plaster fell off, vertical walls were damaged in addition to other damage on the building.

27. According to the report submitted on 19 April 1999, the following facility was damaged in the Nišava District, Niš, due to the bombing on the night of 5/6 April 1999:

  • Medical Center Aleksinac, organizational unit Outpatient Clinic Aleksinac - the building was demolished with all equipment, services relocated to other facilities within the Medical Center.

28. According to the report submitted on 19 April 1999, the following facility was damaged in the Kolubara District, Valjevo:

  • Medical Center Valjevo, organizational unit General Hospital Valjevo - windows partially broken in all hospital wards.

 

21 April 1999 update

29. According to the report submitted on 21 April 1999, the following facility was damaged by air strikes on 20 April 1999 in the Kolubara District, Valjevo:

  • Medical Center Valjevo, organizational unit General Hospital Valjevo - broken windows, skylights and glazed doors (125), cracked ceilings and walls in hospital buildings.

 

22 April 1999 update

30. According to the report submitted on 22 April 1999, the following facility was damaged by the bombing on 20 April 1999 in the territory of the Toplica District, Prokuplje:
Outpatient Clinic Kuršumlija - window panes broke on all facilities (500 m2) due to detonations in the close vicinity.

31. According to the report submitted on 22 April 1999 the following facilities were damaged by the bombing on 12 April 1999 in the Moravica District, Čačak:

  • Medical Center Čačak, organizational unit Outpatient Clinic Ivanjica:
    - Infirmary in Medjurečje - broken window panes (10 m2 x 5 mm), damaged plaster on a partition wall 10 m2;
    - Infirmary in Prilike - broken all glass (5 mm) on windows, doors and skylights, 55 m2.

32. According to the report submitted on 22 April 1999, the following damage of medical facilities occurred in the Kolubara District, Valjevo:

  • Medical Center Valjevo, organizational unit General Hospital Valjevo:

Damage on 21 April 1999:
- broken window panes (65), skylights (20), ceiling plates (20), window frames out of place, cracked walls and ceilings on the building;

Damage on 22 April 1999:
- broken window panes (50), skylights (9), elevator glass (2), several ceiling plates, over 30 neon lights fell out and broke, a large glass of the rehabilitation pool broke, several window frames and doors were blown out, walls and ceilings cracked.
