MORE INITIATIVES ON THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBINGS
A FEW CONVENIENT ACCOMODATIONS

On March 24th, 1999 NATO unleashed uninterruptedly for 78 days its fire power against the territory of the then F.R. of Yugoslavia - a country which had been already amputated by secessions started in 1991 and is now further dismembered among Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo. For its shelling NATO used weapons which are banned by international conventions (e.g. cluster bombs), weapons that inflict serious damage to the present and future generations (e.g. with depleted uranium), and targeted chemical plants, civil infrastructures, public transportation services, embassies of third-part countries...

Those bombings represented the culmination of a process of attacks against this multinational and sovereign country, for which dismantling and cheap sell-out to foreign Capitalism had been planned. In the subsequent years, all key sectors of the economy and the financial system of Yugoslavia were dismissed. While the historical structures  of the Yugoslav army were largely abandoned, the fate of the small republics born out of the disintegration was to become gradually absorbed into the euro-Atlantic military alliances, and to bend to their objectives.

In turn, the whole phenomenon of the Yugoslav crisis - which dates back to 1991 and cannot be held for concluded yet today - is paradigmatic of the phase started with smashing the Berlin wall: a phase that, far from ensuring peace and freedom, has been characterized with wars and devastation, all passed off to the public opinion by means of a dishonest rhetoric about “rights” and deceitful campaigns based on disinformation. Italy as an example: after repeatedly violating its own Constitution by serving as a launch site for the bombings and by taking part in several war missions in close and distant countries, Italy is still employing a growing percentage of its State budget for financing the military machinery, in spite of a chasing economic and social crisis... and it is asked to host more and more foreign military bases on its own territory!

It is in a town like Vicenza, nerve center of such processes, that we promote a big national and international happening on the occasion of 10th Anniversary of the beginning of those bombings, in order to tell what they have been really, beyond the smokescreen created by the media... And in order to discuss about future activities and perspectives for the internationalist solidarity among workers and the movement that all over Europe fights against the war and the military bases.
