IDEA TO SET UP BALKAN FEDERATION IS RESURFACING - PAPANDREOU
BRUSSELS, Jan 5 (Tanjug) - Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou told the German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung in an interview that an old idea to create a federation of Balkan states is being mentioned in Greece again and has been received well by the European Union.
The Greek EU Presidency quoted Papandreou as saying that there were no more black holes in the Balkans and that many Balkan countries were striving to enter the European Union, which he said would happen very soon.
Papandreou failed to specify what "very soon" meant, but said that Balkan countries must have a future in Europe and that Greece, as the EU president, would do its best to speed up the process of accession of the Balkan countries to the European Union.
The Greek presidency of the EU will be crowned by a summit of EU and Balkan countries in Thessaloniki in June.
