US experts assist Serbia's environmental development

Belgrade, Feb 2, 2004 - Serbian Minister of Natural Resources and
Environmental Protection Andjelka Mihajlov said that the first of the
six training workshops, which are part of the US Environmental
Protection Agency's (EPA) assistance, will be held from Feb 3 to 5 in
Belgrade.

The first training workshop entitled "Environmental Compliance and
Enforcement" is being organised by the US Embassy to Serbia-Montenegro,
the EPA and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central and Eastern
Europe.

The EPA assistance is aimed at boosting capacities and performance of
the newly-established Serbian Agency for Environment and the Serbian
Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

Minister Mihajlov and US Ambassador to Serbia-Montenegro William
Montgomery told a press conference on Monday that environmental
cooperation is a very important element in the bilateral relations
between the two countries. The training workshops represent an
opportunity for EPA experts to transfer their experiences in the
practice of environmental protection to local experts.

The cooperation between the EPA and the environment ministries of
Serbia and Montenegro is a part of a network of international
partnerships promoted by the International Network for Environmental
Compliance and Enforcement Network (INECE) and the Balkan Environmental
Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement Network (BERCEN).
