Dear all,
the tragic situation of hundreds of Roma refugees in Medzitlija (Macedonia)=
that have
decided to take direct action to break out of their miserable conditions is=
worsening.
These refugees are part of the 80-150,000 Roma that have been chased out of=
NATO
occupied Kosovo by the US-backed KLA (which has continued to persecute ethn=
ic
minorities and Albanian activists opposed to its agenda). Many have fled t=
o NATO-
occupied Macedonia, where they also face horrible living conditions and
discrimination.
Below is the latest appeal by a representative of this group calling for in=
ternational
solidarity with the plight of the Roma. Western government's would like to=
'disappear'
these victims of NATO's aggression on Yugoslavia, just as they are trying t=
o
marginalize the legitimate claims to return of Palestinian refugees, or sil=
ence the
widerspread popular opposition to their policies in occupied Afghanistan an=
d Iraq. ]
Included below is contact information for some of the Roma activists that a=
re working
on this issue in Macedonia. I would urge you to forward their message to a=
s many
people, organizations, media outlets, journalists, etc. as you can think of=
to bring
their plight into the public eye or if you, yourself are involved with the =
media to
contact them and get their story out ASAP.

Refugee crises in Medzitlija
More then 690 refugees Roma, Ashkalies, Egyptains from Kosovo in the moment=
are
on Medzitlija, on Macedonian - Greek border, waiting for answer from the Eu=
ropean
Union for entrance in Greece.
They have sended ampications for asylum to the Greek Embassy. Still there i=
s no
offical document from EU. The situation of the refugees on Medzitlija is ve=
ry bad and
is getting worse every moment.
The help is not coming. There is blocade by UNHCR or somebody else, we don'=
t
know. Three new babies were born, two girls and one boy. Roma NGO's are not=
helping, about other NGO's to don't discuss. In Bitola is formed Crises sta=
ff, that is
working on humanitarain plan. In the staff are: Roma NGOs from Bitola,
representatives of the refugees. They can help them only in water, nothing =
else.
Everybody is asking and saying that will help , but the help is not coming =
in
Medzitlija. The refugees are on their possitions, requests to leave Macedon=
ia, because
of 4 years mistakes in finding solutions for the refugees. In the moment th=
ey are
supported by refugees from camp Katlanovo, who are organzing protests in fr=
ont of
offices of European institutions in Skopje and foreign Embassies in Skopje.=
In the
moment there is no solutions for the crieses. In Macedonia mr. Nezdet Must=
afa as
Member of the Macedonian Parliament has authorization by the ERF to negotia=
te
around the crises with the government and non-government institutions,
organizations in Macedonia. On international level is authorized Mr. Rudko =
Kawczynski.
On the problem more days in Bitola is working Mr. Nicolae Gheorghe, CPRS, O=
SCE
ODIHR Warsaw.

Rifugiati a Medzitlija ? nostra unità di crisi

Più di 690 rifugiati dal Kossovo: Roma, Askali, Egizi sono tuttora a
Medzitlija, sul confine Greco - Macedone. Durante la permanenza a
Medzitlija sono nati due bambine e un bambino.
Ancora nessuna risposta ufficiale dalla EU o dalla ambasciata greca alla
loro richiesta di asilo.
La situazione dei rifugiati, già critica, peggiora da un giorno con
l'altro.
Non giungono gli aiuti, che comunque hanno cominciato a partire da varie
località in Europa. Dev'esserci una specie di blocco dell'UNHCR o di
qualcun altro, non lo sappiamo. Le ONG Rom non intendono impegnarsi
direttamente nella raccolta di aiuti, per non correre il rischio di
polemiche con le altre ONG.
A Bitola si è formata un'unità di crisi, che sta lavorando ad un piano
umanitario. E' composta dalla ONG dei Rom di Bitola e da rappresentanti
dei rifugiati. Al momento possono soltanto rifornirci di acqua e
nientaltro. La nostra impressione è che molti in Macedonia e fuori, si
stiano prodigando (qualcuno dica solo di farlo), ma qui non si è ancora
visto niente.
Nella pratica siamo tuttora abbandonati a noi stessi: anche per questo
intendiamo lasciare la Macedonia, dopo aver assistito per 4 anni a tutti
gli errori nel trovare una soluzione per i rifugiati. Sappiamo che i
rifugiati del campo profughi di Katlanovo, stanno protestando a Skopije di
fronte agli uffici della Comunità Europea e alle Ambasciate.
Purtroppo, non vediamo ancora uno sbocco a questa crisi. In Macedonia, mr.
Nezdet Mustafa, membro del Parlamento, ha assunto il compito di negoziare
con il Governo e anche le associazioni non governative. A livello
internazionale, il nostro portavoce è mr. Rudko Kawczynski.

Warsaw.
