Norway to help Serbia remove cluster bombs left over
from 1999 NATO bombing

BELGRADE, Serbia - Norway will help Serbia remove
cluster bombs and other munitions left over from the
1999 NATO bombing of the Balkan republic, the two
country's foreign ministers said Wednesday.

The move is part of stepped up military cooperation
following Serbia's recent accession to NATO's
Partnership for Peace program, nearly seven years
after the air war, the officials said.

"Norway will help Serbia remove those explosive
devices," Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere
said after talks in Belgrade with his Serbian
counterpart, Vuk Draskovic.

Draskovic added that "this is good news."

"NATO knows where they (bombs) are, and Norway is
ready to help," he said.

NATO bombed Serbia for 78 days in 1999....

The alliance used cluster bombs on several occasions
during the air war. The bombing killed hundreds and
destroyed much of Serbia's infrastructure before
Milosevic pulled out of Kosovo and relinquished
control over the province to the U.N. and NATO.

Relations between Serbia and NATO have improved since
Milosevic was removed from power in 2000 by a
pro-Western coalition. The former president died last
March while on a trial for genocide charges at a U.N.
war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands.

No details were immediately available about the
quantities of the explosives scattered in Serbia.
Draskovic said the project will be funded by the
Norwegian government and carried out with the Serbian
army.

The Partnership for Peace program is a NATO project,
created in 1994, which aims to create trust between
NATO and states in Europe and the former Soviet Union.
