YUGOSLAV FOREIGN MINISTER ON OBSERVER STATUS IN NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT
NEW YORK, Nov 14 (Tanjug) - Yugoslav Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic
thanked Wednesday the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement
for its decision to grant observer status to Yugoslavia. The following
are excerpts of his address to the Bureau:
"As one of the five successor states of the former Yugoslavia, the
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has actively followed the activities of
the Movement, greatly appreciative of its role in the world. This all
the more so since as a country in transition, it has similar
developmental interests and aspirations as most of the members of the
movement.
"The fortieth anniversary of the first Summit Conference of the
Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, held in Belgrade in 1961, is an
opportunity to look back at the contribution the Movement has made to
international peace and security, disarmament, decolonization,
eradication of poverty and the democratization of international
relations.
"The former Yugoslavia made a significant contribution to these efforts
as well. And although the world may look very different today from what
it looked like at the time of the creation of the Movement, the non-
aligned countries have an important role to play.
In the present conditions of globalization, they should use their
influence to promote international relations on the principles of
equality, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and non-
interference in internal affairs.
"My country, a strong supporter of these principles itself, will strive
to make a contribution to international peace and security by
strengthening regional cooperation and links, as well as by deepening
friendly relations and all-round cooperation with all countries of the
world", Svilanovic said.
