Serbia tops list as European country with most refugees

Belgrade. Sasa Jankovic, Serbia's Ombudsman, used the occasion of International Refugee Day on Sunday to bring attention to the fact that Serbia remains at the top of an unfortunate list as the European country with the largest refugee and internally displaced population, Xinhua News Agency informed.
Jankovic said that "the time has finally come to turn words into action plans and deeds, "to bring to a close the protracted refugee issue in Serbia.
According to government statistics, Serbia currently has 86,000 refugees and 210,000 internally displaced persons. Its refugees crisis began almost two decades ago with the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s and was followed by a second wave of forced migration from Kosovo in 1999. There are still 60 collective centers in operation with more than 4,700 people living in them.
In recent years a program to purchase and donate rural households throughout the country has been supported by both the domestic government and international humanitarian agencies.
According to Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic," International Refugee Day is the right moment to remind the world of those who, in order to save their own lives, were forced to abandon their homes."
