NOTA: diversamente da quanto riportato dall'ANSA, il mandato di cattura
contro Ceku non si riferisce ai crimini commessi in Kosovo durante la
occupazione militare occidentale (dai bombardamenti NATO in poi),
bensi' ai crimini commessi da Ceku in Slavonia (odierna Croazia) in
qualita' di ufficiale dell'esercito croato ai danni della popolazione
serba autoctona !

(ANSA-AFP) - BUDAPEST, 29 FEB - L'albanese Agim Ceku, capo dei Corpi
di protezione del Kosovo (Cpk), e' stato arrestato oggi all'aeroporto
di Budapest in esecuzione di un mandato di cattura internazionale. Lo
ha detto un responsabile della polizia ungherese. ''Abbiamo
arrestato Agim Ceku che e' ricercato dall'Interpol'', ha detto il
portavoce della polizia di frontiera ungherese Sandor Orodan. Il
portavoce ha aggiunto che Ceku e' arrivato a Budapest da Praga, in
compagnia di un soldato americano, e che intendeva recarsi a
Pristina, il capoluogo della provincia serba del Kosovo. Le
autorita' ungheresi non sono state in grado di precisare i motivi del
mandato di cattura internazionale, ma Orodan ha detto che questi
potrebbero essere gli stessi di un precedente mandato di arresto
internazionale. La Serbia in passato aveva chiesto che fosse emesso
un mandato di cattura internazionale contro Agim Ceku per crimini
contro l'umanita' e genocidio commessi contro i serbi in Kosovo dopo
che la provincia era passata sotto il controllo delle Nazioni UNite e
della Nato, nel giugno 1999. Agim Ceku e' uno degli ex comandanti
dell'Esercito di liberazione del Kosovo (Uck), ora disciolto, un
gruppo armato albanese che ha combattuto le forze di Belgrado nel
Kosovo durante il conflitto del 1998-99. Era stato detenuto per breve
tempo in Slovenia lo scorso ottobre in base alle accuse serbe, e
poi presto rilasciato. Attualmente dirige il Cpk, sorvegliato da
vicino dall'Unmik, la Missione delle Nazioni Unite in Kosovo forte di
3.000 uomini e che ha il mandato di reagire a catastrofi umanitarie.
I membri del Cpk hanno il diritto di possedere un numero limitato
di armi e la maggioranza degli albanesi vedono in loro il nucleo
delle future forze armate regolari di un agognato Kosovo
indipendente. La provincia fa tuttora parte della Serbia MOntenegro,

(ANSA-AFP) - PRISTINA (SERBIA), 29 FEB - Il dirigente albanese del
Kosovo Agim Ceku, arrestato oggi all'aeroporto di Budapest in
esecuzione di un mandato di cattura internazionale, e' stato
liberato. Lo ha detto un suo collaboratore a Pristina, capoluogo
della provincia serba, che lo hanno contattato per telefono.
''Abbiamo potuto metterci in contatto con il signor Ceku e lui ci ha
confermato che e' stato liberato e che sara' di ritorno (a Pristina)
domani'', ha detto Enver Dugolli, portavoce dei Corpi di protezione
del Kosovo (Cpk), l'organizzazione paramilitare comandata da Ceku.
In precedenza a Pristina il presidente del Kosovo Ibrahim Rugova
aveva condannato l'arresto di Agim Ceku, considerato un eroe
nazionale dagli albanesi del Kosovo, definendolo ''inaccettabile''.
Rugova aveva chiesto alle autorita' ungheresi di ignorare la
richiesta di mandato di cattura internazionale per crimini di guerra

Ceku arrested in Budapest on Belgrade-issued warrant
BUDAPEST -- Sunday – The commander of the UN-created
civil emergency unit, the Kosovo Protection Corps
(KPC), was detained in Hungary this morning on an
arrest warrant issued by the Serbian authorities.
Agim Ceku, a former leader of the Kosovo Liberation
Army, was arrested at Budapest’s Ferihegy airport at
around 11am. He was on his way back to Kosovo after a
one-month training course with 20 KPC members in the
Czech Republic.
A spokesman for the Hungarian police said they were
trying to contact the authorities in Belgrade to
confirm the warrant’s validity.
It accuses Ceku of war crimes, including genocide,
during the 1998-99 war in the province.
Ceku has been arrested once before on the same warrant
in Slovenia, but was quickly released.
The 3,000-strong KPC that he heads was created by the
United Nations administration from the disbanded
guerrilla army.
Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova said the detention was
“unacceptable” and urged the Hungarian authorities
against acting on Serb warrants, which he said were
“not valid for the people of Kosovo.”

Ceku released as Croatian citizen
BUDAPEST -- Sunday - Agim Ceku, a former guerrilla
leader and current commander of the Kosovo Protection
Corps, was released by Hungarian police today and
handed over to Croatian diplomatic authorities.
A spokesman for the Hungarian border patrol said the
Croatian embassy in Budapest had identified Ceku as a
Croatian citizen.
“That individual entered Hungary with Croatian
documents, but in the warrant against him it is stated
he is a citizen of Serbia,” Sandor Orodan told Beta
news agency.
He conceded it was “perfectly clear” that the
individual detained was the individual on the warrant,
but said that Interpol was not able to “unequivocally”
identify him.
Ceku was detained today at the airport in Budapest on
a warrant issued by the Serbian authorities, accusing
him of genocide in Kosovo after the arrival of the
international administration and peacekeepers.

UN mission asks Belgrade to withdraw Ceku warrant
PRISTINA -- Wednesday – The United Nations mission in
Kosovo has asked the authorities in Belgrade to
withdraw an arrest warrant against former guerrilla
leader and current Kosovo Protection Corps commander
Agim Ceku.
Crimes committed in Kosovo are outside the
jurisdiction of the Serbian judiciary, UNMIK
spokesperson Izabella Karlowicz said today, after a
row erupted this week over the arrest and then release
of Ceku in Hungary.
A former leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Ceku
was detained at the airport in Budapest on an
international arrest warrant issued by the Serbian
authorities, accusing him of genocide against the Serb
population in Kosovo. He was later released after
producing Croatian citizenship papers.
Karlowicz repeated today that under Security Council
Resolution 1244, only the Kosovo judicial bodies have
jurisdiction over crimes committed by citizens of
Kosovo.
The UN mission has requested an urgent meeting with
the Interpol head office to resolve this “very
delicate matter,” said Karlowicz.
