insidious and the most invisible. It is one that won't go away when
the troops come home. It won't solve the quagmire we have created over
there. The half life cycle for DU is 4.5 billion years. It is not
going away simply because we withdraw and the press goes home. The
toxic pollution from DU can never be cleaned up. Nor will it stay in
Iraq. Once in the air, it can blow anywhere. The mutation damage done

Consequences of depleted uranium dropped in NATO air strikes
Exposed to radiation and forgotten
Three years after NATO air strikes on Serbia, experts
of the Institute for radiology protection 'Dr.
Dragomir Karajovic' found genetic changes and presence
of uranium in the bodies of people living on Strpce
Plateau and in the villages of southeast Serbia. The
same was found in people who carried out
decontamination of Lustica Peninsula in Montenegro.
'Two years later nobody knows what is going on with
these people. Nobody is following up their health
condition, we even don't' know if they are still
alive', Doctor Radomir Kovacevic says.
The experts of this institute say that these negative
consequences have affected 112 locations from which
107 are in Kosovo. Four are in the southeast of
Serbia, Bratoselce, Reljan, Borovac and Pljackovica.
'These are actually four radioactive fields surrounded
by barbwire only. Farmers' houses and lands are
immediately next to them. Other parts of the State are
safe since the ammunition with 238 uranium was not
used north of Pljackovica. However, after explosion
molecules of aerosol that contain uranium appear in
the fire and they enter moisture drops in the air.
There they can remain for a very long time and a wind
can take them anywhere. They are invisible and can
circle around the whole planet and cannot be removed
with any 'vacuum cleaner'. One such particle is
sufficient to turn a healthy cell into a malignant
one. One malignant cell can start a process that will
take a life away. Both 'Focus' international
commission and UNEP have proved presence of such
particles above the villages in the south of Serbia',
Doctor Karajovic says.
'Serbia Government has promised, but still has not
financed a single scientific project that would follow
the consequences of air strikes and health condition
of the population', Doctor Kovacevic adds.
'In 2003 we made a program called 'Oncology preventive
for population in areas contaminated with uranium'.
This program does not require large sums of money.
Sadly, so far nobody has shown any interest in it',
Doctor Dragomir Krajovic concluded.

Cancer increasingly frequent among Kosovo Serbs
In Italy, 34 members of NATO mission in the Balkans have died so far.
They all were serving in Bosnia and Kosovo during which time they were
exposed to radiation from depleted uranium contained in NATO missiles
fired during air strikes in 1999.
The last victim was Professor Giovanni Casselli who was in Kosovo
after NATO bombing as participant in 'Rainbow' operation.
Although no detailed results are available, medical experts claim for
'Blic' that consequences of the use of deplete uranium are obvious
among civil population in Kosovo. Our soldiers who were on duty in
contaminated areas also have health problems.
Professor Casselli is the first civil victim in Italy, while all
others were soldiers. Another 270 Italians are affected by various
kinds of tumor. Long list of victims and pressure by public opinion
resulted in setting up a commission to Italian Senate that has to
establish who the responsible people are.
Missiles with depleted uranium were used in 112 missions against Serb
troops. The largest number /total 40 missiles/ was used in
Pec-Djakovica-Prizren triangle. That is exactly the area where
Italians troops are stationed after NATO came in Kosovo.
Soldiers of former Yugoslav Army who were in that area are also under
permanent medical check at Medical military Academy in Belgrade.
'At the beginning we were controlling health of 2,000 soldiers. Within
these five years their number decreased to 400 that are still a
high-risk group. Their health is going to be supervised in the
following five years, too. All of these soldiers were mainly in the
area along border with Albania. They were involved in decontamination
and pulling out of the staff and technique', Colonel and Doctor Milan
Misovic of Military Medical Hospital in Belgrade says. According to
his words the possible reasons for the changes on their organs are the
living conditions at the time of service in Kosovo. The soldiers spent
almost 20 days in trenches, smoking and eating tin-food only.
IN our southern province so far not a single serious medical research
of the consequences of NATO bombing on civil population was carried out.
'We are faced with increased number of malignant tumors, especially
malignant melanoma with deadly outcome. Over eight years, from 1991 to
1999 in Strpce municipality there were four cases of malignant
melanoma. After bombing, within a year only, 2000 and 200l, there were
even eight cases of this disease', Doctor Sasa Krstic, of Health
Center in Strpce Municipality says for 'Blic'.
USA, GB and France have missiles with depleted uranium. According to
estimations about 10 tons of depleted uranium was contained in
missiles fired by mainly American combat planes. Unlike Italians,
American NATO soldiers wear gas masks, gloves, goggles and impermeable
uniform even at high temperatures. French soldiers wear protection,
too. Soldiers serving in Kosovo are advised not to have children for
the period of three years.

Malabarba e Bulgarelli contro i generali che hanno taciuto sui rischi
Macigni che piovono sulla testa dei generali italiani degli anni
novanta. Ecco cosa sono i documenti depositati dall'Osservatorio
militare, il cui presidente Cosimo Tartaglia è stato ascoltato ieri,
presso la commissione d'inchiesta sull'uranio impoverito istituita dal
senato e presieduta dal leghista Paolo Franco. C'è un filmato del
Pentagono con tutti i rischi dei proiettili all'uranio impoverito e le
procedure per proteggere i soldati, mostrato e distribuito ai nostri
generali durante i brefing che si tenevano a Bagnoli nel `95 al
momento dei raid sulla Bosnia. Il manifesto l'ha anticipato ieri.
Quelli che partivano da Aviano erano caccia A10 che spararono 10.800
colpi corazzati con quel metallo, secondo i dati forniti alla fine del
2000 dall'allora ministro della difesa Sergio Mattarella che affermò
tuttavia di aver appreso quelle notizie con grave ritardo. Centinaia
di militari italiani ammalati di leucemie e altri tumori, almeno 23
morti. E chissà quanti tra le popolazioni civili colpite in Bosnia ma
prima ancora in Iraq e in Somalia e in seguito ancora nella ex
Jugoslavia (guerra del Kosovo) e di nuovo in Iraq. Ora viene fuori che
i generali sapevano tutto da cinque anni ma hanno taciuto, sicuramente
con i soldati, forse anche con i vertici politici. «Potrebbero non
aver avvertito il governo - ha osservato Tartaglia nella sua audizione
- Forse hanno sottovalutato il politico. Oppure hanno taciuto il
rischio con l'assenso del governo».
Le opposizioni alzano la voce. «La testimonianza dell'Osservatorio
Militare è clamorosa: perché le gerarchie militari hanno mantenuto
segreta per anni la pericolosità dell'uranio impoverito per gli
operatori e per la popolazione civile, con la conseguente ecatombe a
cui abbiamo assistito dopo la guerra nei Balcani?», chiede il
capogruppo del Prc al senato Gigi Malabarba, membro della commissione
d'inchiesta. «La commissione d'inchiesta dovrà dare una risposta
definitiva. Quel che è certo - aggiunge Malabarba - è che il ministro
della difesa Antonio Martino finora ha raccontato bugie». Per Mauro
Bulgarelli dei Verdi la documentazione dell'Osservatorio «è l'ennesima
conferma che le nostre autorità militari erano a conoscenza da tempo
dei pericoli dell'uranio impoverito e hanno taciuto non fa che
aumentare lo sdegno e la rabbia per tante morti che potevano essere
evitate. E' vergognoso questo muro di omertà».
L'ex ammiraglio Falco Accame, presidente dell'Anavafaf (Associazione
vittime delle forze armate), risale ancora più indietro nel tempo:
«L'Italia era stata avvertita della pericolosità dell'uranio
impoverito da parte della Nato fin dal 1984 e ciò anche per quanto
riguarda il maneggio a freddo del metallo». Accame è in possesso di un
documento con quella data nel quale già «si stabilivano anche le norme
di protezione da adottare (occhiali, maschere, guanti, tute)». E «in
un documento del 1993 - aggiunge Accame - il capo della sanità
militare Usa indicava la pericolosità dell'uranio per quanto concerne
la possibile ingenerazione di tumori e pochi mesi dopo, il 13 ottobre
1993, vennero emanate dagli Usa le norme di sicurezza per il personale
impegnato in Somalia nella operazione Restore Hope, dove i nostri
militari hanno operato fianco a fianco in molte operazioni con i
reparti Usa». Per gli italiani le protezioni anti-uranio sono scattate
solo alla fine del 1999. E le malattie denunciate, per le quali gli
stati maggiori si ostinano a negare qualsiasi rapporto con l'uranio
impoverito, risalgono soprattutto alle missioni precedenti, proprio
nel Corno d'Africa oltre che nei Balcani.

URANIO IMPOVERITO:
SEGRETARIO COMMISSIONE PARLAMENTARE,
"IL GOVERNO MENTE"
"Confermo tutte le denunce fatte dall'UNAC e la falsità delle
affermazioni sostenute dal ministro della Difesa, Martino e dalle
gerarchie militari: tutti i militari malati ci raccontano le stesse cose".
Così Luigi Malabarba, capogruppo di Rifondazione comunista al Senato e
segretario della Commissione d'inchiesta sull'uranio impoverito,
intervenendo al congresso nazionale dell'UNAC, Unione Nazionale Arma
dei Carabinieri, ha contestato le affermazioni tranquillizzanti di
governo ed esercito sulla mancanza di effetti dannosi dei proiettili
sul nostro contingente in zone di guerra.
"I 33 morti accertati e gli almeno 300 contaminati dopo aver
partecipato a missioni all'estero e le nascite di bambini deformi
vicino ai poligoni militari - ha aggiunto Malabarba - per questi casi,
l'assassino ha un nome: uranio impoverito". Ed è "micidiale"
l'atteggiamento del ministero della Difesa e delle gerarchie militari
che, oltre a negare il nesso causa effetto tra tumori e uranio,
affermano che non viene utilizzato dalle nostre truppe.
Il ministro della Difesa Martino, secondo Malabarba, "si è preparato
all'audizione, cui si è presentato, con dati manipolati, e cercando di
imbonire malati e famiglie con promesse, ma poi, quando questi ragazzi
si ammalano, come minimo ottengono dai loro superiori un atteggiamento
ricattatorio".
Per quanto riguarda le cause di servizio riconosciute, sottolinea il
senatore del PRC, "negli unici, rari, casi in cui sono state concesse,
ciò è avvenuto solo in seguito a cause legali contro il ministero
della Difesa".

the troops come home. It won't solve the quagmire we have created over
there. The half life cycle for DU is 4.5 billion years. It is not
going away simply because we withdraw and the press goes home. The
toxic pollution from DU can never be cleaned up. Nor will it stay in
Iraq. Once in the air, it can blow anywhere. The mutation damage done
to human cells will continue to be passed in perpetuity – much like a
sick joke around the internet. What this administration is committing
is a silent, quiet genocide of both planet and people...

Consequences of depleted uranium dropped in NATO air strikes
Exposed to radiation and forgotten
Three years after NATO air strikes on Serbia, experts
of the Institute for radiology protection 'Dr.
Dragomir Karajovic' found genetic changes and presence
of uranium in the bodies of people living on Strpce
Plateau and in the villages of southeast Serbia. The
same was found in people who carried out
decontamination of Lustica Peninsula in Montenegro.
'Two years later nobody knows what is going on with
these people. Nobody is following up their health
condition, we even don't' know if they are still
alive', Doctor Radomir Kovacevic says.
The experts of this institute say that these negative
consequences have affected 112 locations from which
107 are in Kosovo. Four are in the southeast of
Serbia, Bratoselce, Reljan, Borovac and Pljackovica.
'These are actually four radioactive fields surrounded
by barbwire only. Farmers' houses and lands are
immediately next to them. Other parts of the State are
safe since the ammunition with 238 uranium was not
used north of Pljackovica. However, after explosion
molecules of aerosol that contain uranium appear in
the fire and they enter moisture drops in the air.
There they can remain for a very long time and a wind
can take them anywhere. They are invisible and can
circle around the whole planet and cannot be removed
with any 'vacuum cleaner'. One such particle is
sufficient to turn a healthy cell into a malignant
one. One malignant cell can start a process that will
take a life away. Both 'Focus' international
commission and UNEP have proved presence of such
particles above the villages in the south of Serbia',
Doctor Karajovic says.
'Serbia Government has promised, but still has not
financed a single scientific project that would follow
the consequences of air strikes and health condition
of the population', Doctor Kovacevic adds.
'In 2003 we made a program called 'Oncology preventive
for population in areas contaminated with uranium'.
This program does not require large sums of money.
Sadly, so far nobody has shown any interest in it',
Doctor Dragomir Krajovic concluded.

NATO soldiers, but civilians, too, are dying from uranium radiation
Cancer increasingly frequent among Kosovo Serbs
In Italy, 34 members of NATO mission in the Balkans have died so far.
They all were serving in Bosnia and Kosovo during which time they were
exposed to radiation from depleted uranium contained in NATO missiles
fired during air strikes in 1999.
The last victim was Professor Giovanni Casselli who was in Kosovo
after NATO bombing as participant in 'Rainbow' operation.
Although no detailed results are available, medical experts claim for
'Blic' that consequences of the use of deplete uranium are obvious
among civil population in Kosovo. Our soldiers who were on duty in
contaminated areas also have health problems.
Professor Casselli is the first civil victim in Italy, while all
others were soldiers. Another 270 Italians are affected by various
kinds of tumor. Long list of victims and pressure by public opinion
resulted in setting up a commission to Italian Senate that has to
establish who the responsible people are.
Missiles with depleted uranium were used in 112 missions against Serb
troops. The largest number /total 40 missiles/ was used in
Pec-Djakovica-Prizren triangle. That is exactly the area where
Italians troops are stationed after NATO came in Kosovo.
Soldiers of former Yugoslav Army who were in that area are also under
permanent medical check at Medical military Academy in Belgrade.
'At the beginning we were controlling health of 2,000 soldiers. Within
these five years their number decreased to 400 that are still a
high-risk group. Their health is going to be supervised in the
following five years, too. All of these soldiers were mainly in the
area along border with Albania. They were involved in decontamination
and pulling out of the staff and technique', Colonel and Doctor Milan
Misovic of Military Medical Hospital in Belgrade says. According to
his words the possible reasons for the changes on their organs are the
living conditions at the time of service in Kosovo. The soldiers spent
almost 20 days in trenches, smoking and eating tin-food only.
IN our southern province so far not a single serious medical research
of the consequences of NATO bombing on civil population was carried out.
'We are faced with increased number of malignant tumors, especially
malignant melanoma with deadly outcome. Over eight years, from 1991 to
1999 in Strpce municipality there were four cases of malignant
melanoma. After bombing, within a year only, 2000 and 200l, there were
even eight cases of this disease', Doctor Sasa Krstic, of Health
Center in Strpce Municipality says for 'Blic'.
USA, GB and France have missiles with depleted uranium. According to
estimations about 10 tons of depleted uranium was contained in
missiles fired by mainly American combat planes. Unlike Italians,
American NATO soldiers wear gas masks, gloves, goggles and impermeable
uniform even at high temperatures. French soldiers wear protection,
too. Soldiers serving in Kosovo are advised not to have children for
the period of three years.

Malabarba e Bulgarelli contro i generali che hanno taciuto sui rischi
Macigni che piovono sulla testa dei generali italiani degli anni
novanta. Ecco cosa sono i documenti depositati dall'Osservatorio
militare, il cui presidente Cosimo Tartaglia è stato ascoltato ieri,
presso la commissione d'inchiesta sull'uranio impoverito istituita dal
senato e presieduta dal leghista Paolo Franco. C'è un filmato del
Pentagono con tutti i rischi dei proiettili all'uranio impoverito e le
procedure per proteggere i soldati, mostrato e distribuito ai nostri
generali durante i brefing che si tenevano a Bagnoli nel `95 al
momento dei raid sulla Bosnia. Il manifesto l'ha anticipato ieri.
Quelli che partivano da Aviano erano caccia A10 che spararono 10.800
colpi corazzati con quel metallo, secondo i dati forniti alla fine del
2000 dall'allora ministro della difesa Sergio Mattarella che affermò
tuttavia di aver appreso quelle notizie con grave ritardo. Centinaia
di militari italiani ammalati di leucemie e altri tumori, almeno 23
morti. E chissà quanti tra le popolazioni civili colpite in Bosnia ma
prima ancora in Iraq e in Somalia e in seguito ancora nella ex
Jugoslavia (guerra del Kosovo) e di nuovo in Iraq. Ora viene fuori che
i generali sapevano tutto da cinque anni ma hanno taciuto, sicuramente
con i soldati, forse anche con i vertici politici. «Potrebbero non
aver avvertito il governo - ha osservato Tartaglia nella sua audizione
- Forse hanno sottovalutato il politico. Oppure hanno taciuto il
rischio con l'assenso del governo».
Le opposizioni alzano la voce. «La testimonianza dell'Osservatorio
Militare è clamorosa: perché le gerarchie militari hanno mantenuto
segreta per anni la pericolosità dell'uranio impoverito per gli
operatori e per la popolazione civile, con la conseguente ecatombe a
cui abbiamo assistito dopo la guerra nei Balcani?», chiede il
capogruppo del Prc al senato Gigi Malabarba, membro della commissione
d'inchiesta. «La commissione d'inchiesta dovrà dare una risposta
definitiva. Quel che è certo - aggiunge Malabarba - è che il ministro
della difesa Antonio Martino finora ha raccontato bugie». Per Mauro
Bulgarelli dei Verdi la documentazione dell'Osservatorio «è l'ennesima
conferma che le nostre autorità militari erano a conoscenza da tempo
dei pericoli dell'uranio impoverito e hanno taciuto non fa che
aumentare lo sdegno e la rabbia per tante morti che potevano essere
evitate. E' vergognoso questo muro di omertà».
L'ex ammiraglio Falco Accame, presidente dell'Anavafaf (Associazione
vittime delle forze armate), risale ancora più indietro nel tempo:
«L'Italia era stata avvertita della pericolosità dell'uranio
impoverito da parte della Nato fin dal 1984 e ciò anche per quanto
riguarda il maneggio a freddo del metallo». Accame è in possesso di un
documento con quella data nel quale già «si stabilivano anche le norme
di protezione da adottare (occhiali, maschere, guanti, tute)». E «in
un documento del 1993 - aggiunge Accame - il capo della sanità
militare Usa indicava la pericolosità dell'uranio per quanto concerne
la possibile ingenerazione di tumori e pochi mesi dopo, il 13 ottobre
1993, vennero emanate dagli Usa le norme di sicurezza per il personale
impegnato in Somalia nella operazione Restore Hope, dove i nostri
militari hanno operato fianco a fianco in molte operazioni con i
reparti Usa». Per gli italiani le protezioni anti-uranio sono scattate
solo alla fine del 1999. E le malattie denunciate, per le quali gli
stati maggiori si ostinano a negare qualsiasi rapporto con l'uranio
impoverito, risalgono soprattutto alle missioni precedenti, proprio
nel Corno d'Africa oltre che nei Balcani.

"IL GOVERNO MENTE"
"Confermo tutte le denunce fatte dall'UNAC e la falsità delle
affermazioni sostenute dal ministro della Difesa, Martino e dalle
gerarchie militari: tutti i militari malati ci raccontano le stesse cose".
Così Luigi Malabarba, capogruppo di Rifondazione comunista al Senato e
segretario della Commissione d'inchiesta sull'uranio impoverito,
intervenendo al congresso nazionale dell'UNAC, Unione Nazionale Arma
dei Carabinieri, ha contestato le affermazioni tranquillizzanti di
governo ed esercito sulla mancanza di effetti dannosi dei proiettili
sul nostro contingente in zone di guerra.
"I 33 morti accertati e gli almeno 300 contaminati dopo aver
partecipato a missioni all'estero e le nascite di bambini deformi
vicino ai poligoni militari - ha aggiunto Malabarba - per questi casi,
l'assassino ha un nome: uranio impoverito". Ed è "micidiale"
l'atteggiamento del ministero della Difesa e delle gerarchie militari
che, oltre a negare il nesso causa effetto tra tumori e uranio,
affermano che non viene utilizzato dalle nostre truppe.
Il ministro della Difesa Martino, secondo Malabarba, "si è preparato
all'audizione, cui si è presentato, con dati manipolati, e cercando di
imbonire malati e famiglie con promesse, ma poi, quando questi ragazzi
si ammalano, come minimo ottengono dai loro superiori un atteggiamento
ricattatorio".
Per quanto riguarda le cause di servizio riconosciute, sottolinea il
senatore del PRC, "negli unici, rari, casi in cui sono state concesse,
ciò è avvenuto solo in seguito a cause legali contro il ministero
della Difesa".
